Appropriate use of bins

Yesterday evening, I went out to bring the blue (recycling) bin in and take the black (landfill) bin out. I discovered a red sticker had been placed on my bin indicating that the bin men had refused to empty it as it contained non-recyclable items.

I dug into the bin, removed the coat hangers, someone had placed there, noticed there was a beef burger in a bun and then began to see the cigarette butts. Lots and lots of damp, smelly, cigarette butts, someone had decided the appropriate place to dispose of was my reycling bin. FFS.

Why do people do that sort of thing? There were lots of black bins in the same place as my blue bin and I cannot conceive of a recycling scheme that might accept cigarette butts for recycling. Surely, if you're going to use someone else's bin, because it's convenient, you at least have the courtesy to pick the correct kind of bin for your rubbish?

Grrrrr.

And, in the era of fortnightly collections, dump lots of their rubbish in your black bin rather than learn to only generate enough to fill their own bin. Not that I'm raging at my feckless, selfish neighbours or anything ;)

people are so often arseholes. our recycle bin is a big communal job so of course this happens all the time. then it gets left for an extra week while it gets stinkier and stinkier and there's a cloud of flies outside the building and coming in my flat which just AUUUUUUUUGH. makes me homicidal with rage and loathing.

No, because people either have enough courtesy to not use your bins, or they have no courtesy at all.

Today I was wondering why people will take their shopping carts and stick them right next to the cart return, but refuse to put them in. I understand being lazy/rude enough to just leave the cart wherever your car was parked. I do not understand putting in enough effort that you could have put the cart away, but NOT actually put it away.

AARRGH! That is very annoying and unpleasant for you to have to deal with
i used to get annoyed that the last set of upstairs neighbours at my old flat used my bin rather than get the one of their own - including for recyclables (because they didn't have a recycling box either). Those bins were tucked neatly oiut of the way but i had to leave my recycling (at the time in an unlidded box - we have wheely bins now which are more secure) on the edge of a main road just outside the part of the town centre with most of the pub and clubs to - it used to throw anything in it - including broken glass.

I have occasionally put rubbish in someone else's bin when far from home and after trying to find a suitable on-street bin - i can't think of any justification for doing it regularly or in your own neighbourhood.
It's confusing when different things are accepted for recycling in different local authorities so i've had visitors make mistakes/made mistakes myself in other people's houses. But yes there is absolutely no way cigarette butts could ever be considered recyclable ...
